About the Band
Defying genres, conventions and stereotypes, “The Bodhisattwa Trio” is an Experimental Jazz Fusion/Avant Garde outfit from Kolkata/Delhi (India), which believes in expressionism, social reflection and spontaneous creation. Drawing influences from life, the universe and everything, the trio, with Bodhisattwa Ghosh on Guitars, Premjit Dutta on Drums and Shonai on Keyboards & Synth Bass delivers a mix of original instrumental compositions with special emphasis on harmonic and rhythmic expansion, theme and variation, virtuosity and spontaneous improvisation.
Formed in 2012, the trio has under their belt a 4-track EP “Fuzzy Logic” and 4 full length instrumental albums “Intersections”, “Heart of Darkness”, “The Grey Album” and “Frontier”. Their 2nd album “Heart of Darkness”, launched in May 2016, has received critical acclaim throughout India and abroad, being the highest selling independent album in India for the month of June 2016, the “Album of the year 2016” by Mid-Day, Mumbai, “One of the top 10 albums of 2016” by Rolling Stone India and The Hindu, Bangalore.
Following the release of their 3rd album “The Grey Album” in January 2019, released under the banner of Croatian Record Label “Intek Music”, which made them the first Indian Artist to be signed with a Croatian Label, the trio completed their 3rd tour of Europe in June-July 2019, performing in festivals and venues across Germany, Poland, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia and Lithuania, receiving critical acclaim and appreciation from audiences, critiques and media alike.
After a long haul of 2 years because of the Covid 19 pandemic, the trio returned to Europe in 2022 and have completed an extensive tour of 15 concerts across Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Germany, Czech Republic and Denmark in October 2022, and has also recorded their 4th full length album ‘Frontier’ in Croatia in collaboration with cutting edge Jazz ensemble ‘Mimika Orchestra’ from Zagreb.
They returned to Europe again in summer 2023 for an extensive tour across 6 countries which included the concert premier of “Frontier” featuring Mimika Orchestra at Fest Jazza International Jazz Festival on 8th July 2023. The trio featuring Mimika Orchestra plan an extensive tour of Europe in fall 2024, followed by an all India tour in winter 2024.

Bodhisattwa Ghosh (Electric Guitar, Compositions)
Composer/Guitar Player/Music Producer Bodhisattwa Ghosh is a disciple of Indian Guitar Legend Amyt Datta, and an endorsee of Fender Guitars & Amps USA and Ernie Ball USA. As a composer and a guitar player, he has been constantly striving to break boundaries in music and establish his own sound, throughout the 20 years so far of his career. Studying the forms of Jazz, Blues, Rock and Indian Classical/Traditional music, he has established himself as a unique musician with a signature sound of his own.
A musician who believes in the continuous process of learning, he has gathered experience in performing in over 20 countries, collaborating with Artistes from all over the world, some of whom are drummer Jim Black (USA), Saxophonist Soweto Kinch (UK), Tabla Player Tanmoy Bose (India) to name just a very few.
Apart from performing across the length and breadth of India and having participated as a composer and as a guitar player in around 17 albums, Bodhisattwa has performed at prestigious venues and festivals in foreign countries such as Blue Note (Poznan, Poland), B-Flat (Berlin, Germany), National Theatre (Oslo, Norway), Bird’s Eye Jazz Club (Basel, Switzerland), No Black Tie (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), Fest Jazza International Jazz Festival (Koprivnica, Croatia), Festival Lent (Maribor, Slovenia), Vilnius Mama Jazz Festival (Vilnius, Lithuania), Bandung World Jazz Festival (Bandung, Indonesia), CAMA Festival (Hanoi, Vietnam), Dev9t Festival (Belgrade, Serbia) to name a few.
Bodhisattwa has previously been a part of numerous outfits such as Ethno Jazz outfit “Kendraka”, World Music ensemble “Taal Tantra”, Electro Rock outfit “Zoo”, and is currently an integral part of his brainchild- New Jazz/Avant Garde outfit “The Bodhisattwa Trio” and Vernacular Rock veteran outfit “Lakkhichhara”, apart from innumerable collaborations in the past and present.
Shonai (Keyboards & Synth Bass)
The ever-evolving Shonai is a Pianist, composer and music educator. He started his training with learning Tabla and then moved to Piano in 1996. He has done Grade 6 in Classical Music, Grade 8 in Jazz Piano and Diploma on Jazz Piano performance ( ALCM ). Shonai studied Jazz till the advanced level under the guidance of two world class Jazz musicians Mr. Andrew Gracias and Mr. Carlton Kitto.
In his 18 years of professional career he has worked in every possible situation from solo to duet and from bands like trio, quartet and Quintet to Big Bands. Shonai being predominantly a contemporary jazz Pianist has worked with Jazz stalwarts like Mr.Carlton Kitto, Mr.Andrew Gracias, Mr.Marcus Dengate ( who has performed with the great Dizzy Gillespie, Scott Hamilton and many more ), Mr. Clive Hughes, Mr. Monojit Dutta, Mr. Rainer Pusch to name a few. He was lucky enough to get a chance to jam with the great Chick Corea in 2018 when he was touring India.
His performance life started with joining All India Radio as a junior artist in 1997. Where later he became a graded artist and has been continuing recording with many jazz artists along with his solo jazz piano recitals.
He has also played extensively throughout India in festivals like GIANTS OF JAZZ ( Delhi, Gurgaon ), JAZZMATAZZ ( Mumbai , Pune), Jam Steady BIG SUNDAY ( Kolkata ), Kolkata Jazz Fest (Kolkata ) and outside India in JAZZMANDU ( Nepal ), Lent Festival ( Slovenia ), Dev9t Festival ( Serbia ), Fest Jazza ( Croatia ) and prestigious venues like The Oberoi Grand, The Park, ITC Sonar, The Park Plaza etc. (Kolkata ). Opus ( Bangalore ), The Humming Tree ( Bangalore ), Blue Frog ( Bangalore ), The Piano Man ( Delhi ), Trident ( Rajasthan ), NCPA Tata Theatre ( Mumbai ), Anti Social ( Mumbai ), Taj Tashi ( Bhutan ), Dhaka Club (Bangladesh), B Flat ( Berlin ), White Cube ( Hamburg ), BlueNote Jazz Club (Poland ), Celica ( Slovenia ), KCM ( Zagreb ), 100cznia ( Poland ), Babel Camp ( Hungary ). Being a versatile musician Shonai had been a part of several bands with different genres of music like Blue Mist ( pop ), Orient Express ( Latin ), Carlton Kitto Jazz Ensemble ( Jazz ), Fast Forward ( Motown and Funk-Jazz ), Big Family ( Blues ), Bramhakhyapa ( Bawl Jazz fusion ), ABHIND ( avant garde ) etc. Apart from these bands he works with many other bands and artists as a session musician. Currently Shonai is a part of two bands, The Bodhisattwa Trio ( Experimental jazz rock fusion ) and his own set up called The Shonai Collective ( contemporary and traditional jazz ).
Being a music educator he has worked in several academic and music schools in Kolkata, Delhi and in prestigious Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory in Nepal.
Premjit Dutta (Percussion)
Premjit started his musical journey at the early age of 5, when he started learning Tabla. He learnt Tabla for 14 years and is a Sangeet ‘Visharad’ from Bangiyo Sangeet Parishad. He is also a disciple of veteran Conguero Monojit ’Kochu’ Datta and has learnt the Congas, Bongos, Timbales and other Latin percussions for more than 10 years and was an integral part of his bands and projects. He is also trained formally in theory of music Grade 5 (ABRSM) and is a certified Grade 8 (Trinity College,London) Drummer. He has been teaching Drums at Calcutta School of Music (CSM) since 2008, Calcutta Centre for Communication and Creativity (C4) since 2007, and also worked as a music educator/mentor at Modern High School and St.Xavier’s School. He has also been conducting workshops and judging music competitions at various institutes and organizations throughout the country and is also a regular artist at All India Radio. During his college days he started performing with his mod-alt. band CAMOUFLAGE in pubs, clubs and college fests and with them he also won competitions like Campus Rock Idols, IIT-Kgp Springfest, IIM-C Armageddon etc. Later in 2008 he was asked by his Guru Monojit Datta to join his latin‐jazz band LOS AMIGOS which helped him to gain experience and explore further as a musician and eventually with them he performed across the country and abroad at distinguished festivals and venues including the prestigious Java Jazz Fest 2011, alongside Carlos Santana, George Benson, George Duke, Four Play. He is also an endorsee of ZILDJIAN cymbals, SONOR drums, VIC FIRTH sticks and REMO heads, and due to his love and knowledge over a diverse genre of music he ends up performing for multiple bands. He is currently working, recording and touring with Fender artist Bodhisattwa Ghosh’s, experimental jazz-fusion act THE BODHISATTWA TRIO with whom he recorded 3 critically acclaimed albums INTERSECTIONS, HEART OF DARKNESS and THE GREY ALBUM and has toured France, Slovenia, Croatia, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Serbia,Lithuania, Malaysia and Bangladesh. He has also been a part of latin-jazz outfit THE LATINATION and with them he has toured most of the cities and venues across the sub-continent. Together with fender artist Rohan Ganguli, he founded the popular blues outfit BIG FAMILY with whom he played regularly in the circuit. He is also a founder member of jazz-funk project THE SHONAI COLLECTIVE and a regular feature for other popular projects like FENDER & FRIENDS, featuring Fender artists including Amyt Datta, Ehsaan Noorani, Loy Mendonsa, Warren Mendonsa, Rudy Wallang, Bruce Lee Mani etc. His career is spread over more than a decade during which he has performed extensively with musicians from India and abroad including Megan Powers (USA), Pradyumna ‘Paddy’ Manot, Sumit Ramachandran, Emmanuel Simon (France), Andrew Kay & Jonathan Kay (Canada), Michael Kuttner (Canada), Maarten Visser(Netherlands), Barbara Busch & Barbara Metzer (Germany), Sergio Dinarte (El Salvador), Ryan Shah (USA), Tadao Ishihama (Japan), Seth Panduranga Blumberg (USA), Saad Chowdhury (UK/Bangladesh), Mohammed Dordoh (Ghana), Carlos Liniero (Colombia) etc. … , to name a few. He was one of the top ten international talents all over the world and the only Indian musician invited by the MUSIC BOARD BERLIN and POP-KULTUR FESTIVAL’2016, to participate in their seminar and festival in August-September ‘16 at Berlin, after which he collaborated with German RnB/Blues singer Tabea Luisa , with whom she formed PROJEKT:TLQ and toured extensively all over India.
